On 19th Jan 2020, GGIM conducted a Night Trek to Kalsubai. 37 participants from Pune and 13 participants from Mumbai successfully completed this trek. It is a part of GGIM’s initiative – Nisarganaad.
About Night Trek to Kalsubai
Kalsubai is the highest peak in Maharashtra. It lies on Nashik – Ahmadnagar boarder. Its height is 5400 ft. It is a moderate level trek that begins from a village called Bari. The region is dominated by Sahyadri’s iconic forts such as Alang-Madan-Kulang, Ratangad, Harishchandragad. Towards North, Harihar, Bramhagiri forts are situated. Famous Bhandardara dam on Arthur Lake is situated on the south side of the peak.
The climb starts from the Bari and is initially gradual for 45 -50 min. After that the climb steepens. At some places there are rock cut steps, and at some places, metal ladders are fixed. This steep section takes an hour or so to climb. Last part of the climb is again a gradual walk till the base of a 100 ft cliff. Another ladder is fixed to negotiate this 100 ft. cliff which takes the hikes to the top of Maharashtra.
During 2012, Giripremi had conducted a unique trek to Kalsubai to promote its Pune Everest Expedition 2012. More than 450 participants had attended the trek and showed support to the expedition. This trek was led by veteran mountaineer Late Shri. N K Mahajan at his age of 90.
